Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free blend)
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) instant yeast
  • ¾ cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp olive oil (plus extra for brushing)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp dried Italian herbs (oregano, basil, or blend)
  • ½ cup tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes
  • ½ tsp dried oregano
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese (or fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced)
  • ½ cup sliced red bell pepper (cut into heart shapes)
  • ¼ cup sliced black olives (optional)
  • ¼ cup thinly sliced red onion
  • Fresh basil leaves (optional, for garnish)
  • Pinch of red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Grated parmesan cheese (optional)
  • Dairy-free vegan cheese (optional, swap for mozzarella if needed)
  • Pre-made pizza dough (optional, for convenience)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, yeast, sugar, salt, garlic powder, and Italian herbs. Add warm water and olive oil. Stir until a shaggy dough forms (about 2-3 minutes).
  2. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. If sticky, add flour a tablespoon at a time. Place in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise for 20 minutes.
  3. Preheat oven to 450°F. Roll dough into a large oval, then shape into a heart using hands or a knife. Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  4. In a small bowl, mix tomato sauce, oregano, garlic powder, and salt/pepper. Spread evenly over the shaped dough, leaving a ½-inch border.
  5. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese over the sauce. Arrange bell pepper slices in heart shapes, scatter onions and olives, and add extras like basil or parmesan.
  6. Brush exposed crust edges with olive oil. Bake for 14-16 minutes, or until crust is golden and cheese is bubbly. Cover edges with foil if browning too fast.
  7. Remove from oven and let cool for 2-3 minutes. Slice, garnish with fresh basil, and serve warm.

Notes

For gluten-free, use a GF flour blend and add ½ tsp xanthan gum if needed. For vegan, use plant-based cheese and load up on veggies. Prep toppings while dough rises for efficiency. Don’t overload toppings to avoid soggy crust. Olive oil brushing ensures a golden edge. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days; reheat in oven or skillet for best texture. Dough can be made ahead or frozen.
