A fast, flavorful, and family-friendly recipe for ground turkey tacos that comes together in under 20 minutes, perfect for busy weeknights or casual dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450 g) lean ground turkey (93% lean recommended)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tbsp taco seasoning (store-bought or homemade blend of chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, salt, pepper)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) water
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 small corn or flour tortillas, warmed before serving
  • Optional toppings: shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese (cheddar or Mexican blend), sliced avocado, sour cream, fresh cilantro, lime wedges

Instructions

  1. Prepare your ingredients: finely chop the onion and mince the garlic cloves. Gather taco seasoning, tomato paste, and water.
  2. Heat a large non-stick skillet or cast-iron pan over medium heat and add 1 tablespoon olive oil. Warm until shimmering but not smoking.
  3. Add chopped onion to the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes until translucent and soft, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant, being careful not to burn.
  5. Add ground turkey to the skillet. Break it up into small pieces with a wooden spoon or spatula. Cook for 5-6 minutes until no longer pink and evenly browned.
  6. Sprinkle taco seasoning evenly over the cooked turkey. Stir in tomato paste to coat the meat well.
  7. Pour in 1/4 cup water, reduce heat slightly, and simmer for 3-4 minutes until most liquid evaporates and turkey is thick and juicy.
  8. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Adjust seasoning as needed.
  9. While turkey simmers, warm tortillas in a dry skillet or microwave wrapped in a damp towel until soft and pliable.
  10. Assemble tacos by spooning turkey filling onto tortillas and adding desired toppings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, cheese, avocado slices, sour cream, cilantro, and lime wedges.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the pan to ensure proper browning. Use fresh spices or homemade taco seasoning for best flavor. If turkey looks dry, add a splash of water or olive oil. Warm tortillas properly to avoid cracking. Leftover turkey filling can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
