A soulful, savory side dish that brings everyone to the table and keeps them coming back for seconds. Perfect for Thanksgiving or any holiday gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups cornbread, crumbled (store-bought or homemade works!)
  • 4 cups day-old bread, diced (French bread or sandwich bread is perfect)
  • 1 cup yellow onion, diced
  • 1 cup celery, diced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for sautéing)
  • 2 teaspoons ground sage
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 cups chicken or vegetable broth (adjust as needed for moisture)
  • 2 large eggs, beaten (for binding)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease your baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the crumbled cornbread and diced bread. Set aside.
  3. Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onions and celery, cooking until softened—about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the chicken broth, beaten eggs, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  5. Add the sautéed vegetables to the bread mixture, then pour the broth mixture over the top. Stir gently until the bread is evenly moistened.
  6. Spread the mixture into your prepared baking dish, pressing down lightly to even out the surface.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and slightly crispy. If you prefer a softer dressing, cover the dish with foil for the first 20 minutes of baking.
  8. Let the dressing cool for about 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

[‘Use a mix of cornbread and sturdy day-old bread for the best texture.’, ‘Taste your broth mixture before adding it to ensure the seasoning is balanced.’, ‘If the mixture feels too dry before baking, add more broth a little at a time.’, ‘For extra crunch, leave the dish uncovered for the entire baking time.’, ‘Prepare the dressing up to a day in advance and store in the fridge. Add a splash of broth before baking to refresh it.’]
