A deliciously crispy and gooey Monte Cristo sandwich featuring layers of Swiss and cheddar cheese, ham, and a hint of sweet jam, perfect for lunch, brunch, or casual dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 thick slices white sandwich bread or brioche
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese (Emmental or Gruyère recommended)
  • 4 slices sharp cheddar cheese
  • 8 slices thinly sliced deli ham (Black Forest ham preferred)
  • 3 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/3 cup whole milk or half-and-half
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • Powdered sugar, for sprinkling
  • Raspberry or strawberry jam, for serving
  • Dijon mustard (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, a pinch each

Instructions

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together 3 large eggs and 1/3 cup whole milk until smooth. Add a pinch of salt and freshly ground pepper. Set aside.
  2. Lay out 4 slices of bread. On each slice, layer 1 slice Swiss cheese, 2 slices ham, and 1 slice cheddar cheese. Optionally, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on the bread before layering. Top with another slice of bread to form a sandwich.
  3. Heat a non-stick skillet or cast iron pan over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons butter and let it melt, coating the surface evenly.
  4. Carefully dip each sandwich into the egg batter, soaking about 10 seconds per side. Avoid oversoaking to prevent sogginess.
  5. Place the dipped sandwich onto the hot skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy, pressing gently with a spatula to ensure even cooking.
  6. Check that the cheese inside is melted and gooey. If not, lower heat and cook a bit longer, avoiding burning the bread.
  7. Transfer sandwiches to a plate or cooling rack. Sprinkle powdered sugar on top and serve with a side of raspberry or strawberry jam for dipping.

Notes

Use medium-low heat to avoid burning the bread while allowing cheese to melt. Do not soak bread too long in egg batter to prevent sogginess. Cook sandwiches in batches if needed to avoid overcrowding the pan. For gluten-free, substitute bread accordingly. Vegetarian options include smoked tofu or grilled mushrooms. Baking alternative: bake at 375°F for 15 minutes, flipping halfway.
